Blind Walls Gallery in Breda is the first art project in the Netherlands to receive an outdoor audio guide in four languages. This allows every visitor to make a donation and then hear a sound clip with explanations for each work of art. Not a classic audio tour like in a regular museum, but an open air version. The visitor gains access to a number of murals via a small box on the wall and thus hears the story behind the Blind Wall via the mobile phone.
How does the audio tour work?
You scan the QR code on the box with which you can donate a contribution to the project. After this you can listen to the audio clip about the mural via your smartphone. With the donations, listeners help Blind Walls Gallery to realize new work in the city and to expand the museum on the street. It is possible to hear a single story, but also to take a tour of the available Blind Walls. Visitors to the city can thus enjoy beautiful local stories in Dutch, German, English or French 24 hours a day, on which the Blind Walls are based.
The first Blind Wall to be provided with an audio guide is the large gray rat on the Mols Parking, painted by Rutger Termohlen, Collin van der Sluis and Super A, located behind the Lange Stallen. It tells about how plague victims were buried here in the Middle Ages, under the watchful eye of St. Joost. Eleven audio guides have now been posted. Five more are added every week. From the end of March 2021, 23 works of art on the street will be provided with the audio guides. https://blindwalls.gallery/audio-guide/
Marianne de Bie, Alderman for Culture of the Municipality of Breda: “The Blind Walls are a wonderful way to view art in an accessible way, just on the street. Especially in this time of the corona it is a great way of “making space”. You can take a walk in the city along the artworks at your own pace, whenever you want. A good example of how we connect Breda Smart City with culture. With this audio tour we make our city even more attractive for residents and visitors. You will hear interesting background information and stories for a small contribution, which makes the experience of a Blind Walls walk even more intense ”.
Dennis Elbers, director of Blind Walls Gallery: “Blind Walls reached the limits of its success because all tours were always fully occupied, in Dutch and only on weekends. The Local Audio Guide directly meets the needs of visitors and residents of Breda ”
Marco Sprenkels, CEO Techtenna: “We believe in applying innovative technology to solve everyday problems. We are proud that with Local Audio Guide we can show that technological digital opportunities are also abundant for the cultural sector. ”
